CCTV Cameras Not Working? Troubleshooting Common Problems

August 28th, 2026

Last updated: August 14th, 2026

A CCTV system is one of the most effective ways to protect a commercial property. Whether it’s monitoring entrances, deterring theft or vandalism, or providing evidence after an incident, businesses rely on security cameras to keep people and premises safe.

The problem is that a CCTV system only works if it’s working properly. A camera that has stopped recording or produces poor-quality images may go unnoticed until footage is needed most.

Many CCTV faults have straightforward causes. Here’s a guide to some of the most common problems, what might be causing them, and when it’s time to call in a professional.

Start with the Basics

Before assuming a camera has failed, begin with a few simple checks.

If one camera has stopped working while the rest of the system is operating normally, the issue may be isolated to that individual unit. If every camera has gone offline, the fault is more likely to be with the recorder, network or power supply.

Check whether:

  • The system has power
  • The recorder is switched on
  • There are any visible warning lights or error messages
  • Cables appear secure and undamaged (pests can sometimes damage cables)

These quick checks can often identify simple problems before more detailed investigation is needed.

Poor Image Quality

If footage looks blurry, grainy or difficult to see, the camera itself may not actually be faulty.

Dirty camera lenses are one of the most common causes of poor image quality, particularly on external cameras exposed to rain, dust and pollution. Cleaning the lens carefully may restore a clear picture.

Other possible causes include:

  • Incorrect camera focus
  • Low lighting conditions
  • Condensation inside the camera housing
  • Damaged lenses
  • Incorrect image settings

If image quality suddenly changes without an obvious reason, it may indicate that the camera requires professional attention.

Camera Keeps Going Offline

Intermittent connection problems can be frustrating because they often appear and disappear without warning.

Network-based CCTV systems may lose connection due to loose network cables, faulty switches or issues with the local network. Wireless cameras can also suffer from poor signal strength if the connection becomes unreliable.

Power interruptions may also cause cameras to restart unexpectedly.

If cameras repeatedly disconnect, the issue should be investigated rather than ignored, as gaps in recording could leave parts of the premises unprotected.

No Recording Available

Sometimes cameras appear to be working normally, but no footage has actually been recorded.

This can happen if:

  • The recorder’s hard drive is full
  • Recording schedules have been changed
  • Motion detection settings have been altered
  • Storage devices have developed faults

Regularly checking recorded footage helps confirm that the system is capturing and storing video correctly.

Night Vision Isn’t Working

Many commercial CCTV cameras automatically switch to infrared mode when light levels fall.

If nighttime footage appears unusually dark, possible causes include dirty infrared sensors, failed infrared LEDs or nearby light sources confusing the camera’s automatic settings.

Trees, signs or building features positioned directly in front of the camera may also reflect infrared light back into the lens, reducing image quality.

Check Cameras Regularly

One of the biggest mistakes businesses make is assuming their CCTV system is working simply because it was installed correctly.

Like any other piece of security equipment, CCTV should be inspected and tested regularly.

Routine maintenance might include:

  • Checking live images from every camera
  • Reviewing recorded footage
  • Cleaning camera housings and lenses
  • Confirming date and time settings are accurate
  • Inspecting cables and connections
  • Testing recording equipment

Small faults discovered during routine inspections are usually much easier and less expensive to resolve than complete system failures.

Integrating CCTV with Other Security Systems

Modern CCTV systems often form part of a wider building security strategy.

Many businesses choose to integrate CCTV with building management systems, allowing security equipment to work alongside other building functions. Cameras can also be linked with access control systems, enabling security teams to review footage whenever doors are accessed or security events occur.

This joined-up approach provides greater visibility across the building and can help businesses respond more quickly to incidents.

When to Call a Professional

Some problems can be resolved with basic checks, but others require specialist knowledge.

Persistent faults, damaged wiring, failed cameras or recording issues should be investigated by experienced engineers. Attempting repairs without the necessary expertise can sometimes make the problem worse or leave parts of the system without protection.

Regular servicing by a qualified provider helps keep CCTV systems operating reliably and ensures faults are identified before they affect security.

All of our CCTV work is carried out by SSAIB-registered engineers, which matters because insurers frequently expect security work to have been done by a certificated installer. Robinsons Facilities Services is SafeContractor approved and holds UKAS ISO 9001 certification. We maintain security systems for offices, warehouses, schools, and commercial property across Yorkshire, the Humber, and beyond.
