What Is a Commercial Gas Interlock System?

<span style=”font-weight: 400;”>A commercial gas interlock system, also known as a commercial gas safety interlock system, is a failsafe device designed to reduce the risk of gas-related accidents in commercial kitchens. With a gas interlock system installed, the flow of gas is restricted until the system is certain that the ventilation system is working properly.

As a result, the potential build-up of carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide is dramatically reduced leading to safer and healthier kitchens for you, your employees, and your customers.

How Does a Commercial Gas Interlock System Work?

<span style=”font-weight: 400;”>Gas interlock systems contain built-in airflow sensors that carefully monitor the entire kitchen ventilation system, including fan operation and duct performance. When the gas interlock system detects normal airflow, the sensor gives the green light for gas to continue flowing to connected appliances. But if any issue is spotted within the ventilation system, the sensor immediately triggers the interlock to cut off the gas supply as a precaution until airflow is restored.

Do I Need a Gas Interlock System?

If you run a commercial kitchen, you must comply with the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998. This states that you must install a commercial kitchen gas interlock system if you are using gas in the kitchen.&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;/span>

Failure to meet British Standard BS6173 and the Gas Safe regulations with your gas interlock system could result in:

 • Failing Gas Safety inspections
 • A risk to the public
 • An insurance claim being void
 • A fine issued to your business
 • Closure of your kitchen

You should also be aware that if you don’t have a commercial kitchen gas interlock system installed, and there is an accident in your kitchen as a result, you could be liable for damages. This could include compensation claims from employees.
