Fire Extinguisher Service
It may be the most common and recognisable of all of the fire fighting equipment: the fire extinguisher. They are installed around commercial buildings all over the UK, and rightly so, as they can be a lifesaver.
A fire extinguisher service is required to ensure that they are always working to their full potential, and that you don’t have to worry about the worst happening, and the extinguisher in the area not functioning properly. There are also legal regulations regarding the condition of fire fighting equipment.
Robinsons Facilities Services can provide a variety of different fire suppression and fire fighting equipment servicing, including checking your fire extinguishers are compliant and safe for use.
Why You Need to Get a Fire Extinguisher Serviced
As fire extinguishers get older, they can become less effective. The fire fighting chemicals inside them can also start to break down and become less potent. This is why it’s important to get your fire extinguishers serviced regularly – to make sure that in the event of a fire, you know that your fire extinguisher will work as intended.
British Standard 5306 Part 3 outlines that an annual inspection from a competent person is also a legal requirement, so you need to get the fire extinguisher serviced to ensure compliance.
As well as the annual fire extinguisher maintenance, you need to regularly get a more advanced service including discharge tests. This is referred to as an extended service or an overhaul service for CO2 systems.
These should be undertaken at least once every 5 years for water, foam and powder and 10 years for CO2.
Benefits of a Fire Extinguisher Service
As well as the obvious potential to save lives, there are benefits to getting fire extinguishers serviced regularly:
- You can avoid potential fines for not having compliant fire equipment
- You can have peace of mind knowing that you’re prepared in the event of a fire
- You may be able to extend the lifespan of your fire fighting equipment
How Often Should I Get My Fire Extinguisher Serviced?
It’s recommended that you get your fire extinguisher serviced at least in line with the minimum annual requirements, but ideally, you should aim to get them serviced more frequently.
Robinsons Facilities Services can provide fire extinguisher servicing at a frequency that suits your business needs – we understand that every business is different. We can also help to create a fire risk assessment to evaluate the fire risks in your business.
What a Fire Extinguisher Service Involves
A fire extinguisher service involves a visual inspection of the fire extinguisher to check for any signs of wear and tear or damage. Tests will also ensure:
- That the extinguisher has not been used and the safety pin is in place.
- That the pressure is correct.
- That the weight is correct and hasn’t significantly dropped.
- That the wall mounting is safe and correct.
- That fire extinguisher signage requirements are met.
For CO₂ fire extinguishers, the service may also check:
- That the fire extinguisher has not been used and the safety pin is in place.
- That there are no leaks.
- Whether the pressure gauge needs replacing.
Advanced and extended services may also discharge the instrument and perform further tests to ensure that it is working as expected.

Fire Extinguisher Service FAQs
The Fire Safety Order sets out that the maintenance and servicing must be done by someone who is “competent” so it is not outlined in detail. It is a good idea to get this done by someone who is accredited and properly trained.
Not servicing a fire extinguisher is not just neglecting your legal duties, but it can also increase the chances that your fire extinguisher is damaged and won’t work when it is needed most.
Yes, BS5306 outlines the fact that fire extinguishers must be tested by discharge every five years (water foam and powder) and then refilled or replaced. The CO2 must be replaced every 10 years.
