Commercial EV Charging Points

Did you know that in the UK, electric cars make up 16.9% of all new car registrations? That figure is likely to grow, and with it, so is the need for commercial electric vehicle charging points.

It isn’t just public and paid car parks that are installing these commercial car charging points, either. For businesses, it can be a big draw for potential customers and staff if you are able to offer them somewhere to charge their vehicle while on site.

Eventually, it is likely that virtually every large car park will have EV charging points. Electric vehicles are definitely taking over, and if you want to keep up with the trend, we can offer commercial electric car charging points installation.

Benefits of Commercial Electric Vehicle Charging Points

Before we dive into how we can help you with both the installation and maintenance of electric vehicle charging points, let’s dive into some of the benefits of having these charge points installed.

  • Bring in additional footfall. There are lots of potential customers out there with electric cars. If you run a business that relies on footfall, like a supermarket, then having a facility to charge a vehicle may make up the customer’s mind.
  • A benefit for employees. Your employees may also be able to make use of the charging point, providing an extra benefit for them.
  • Environmental benefits. Of course, one of the main reasons that people are switching to electric cars is the environmental benefit, which is something your business may look to support.
  • An extra income stream. It is possible to charge for the use of your charging points which can bring in more income for your business.

It may well make perfect sense for your business premises to invest in a charging point for electric cars, a service that we can provide in Yorkshire as well as the whole of the North of England.

Different Charging Times and Power Levels

When you buy an electric vehicle charging point, you have many different choices for the type of power level you need, and therefore the speed of the charge.

The main options that you may have when choosing to install a system like this are whether you want a standard, fast, rapid, or ultra-rapid charger.

Standard (3kW power with an 8-15 hour charging time) – May be suitable for employees at work, to provide them with partial power, or for businesses like hotels with people who stay overnight.
Fast (7-22kW power with 4-6 hour charging time) – Great for environments where people spend a fair amount of time on site, for instance, if you are providing a charging point for your employees while they work.
Rapid (50kW power with 30 minutes average charging time) – Great for situations where customers don’t spend a huge amount of time on site, for instance a supermarket.
Ultra-Rapid (100-200 kW with around 15-20 minutes average charging time). Great for service stations and situations where people are pushed for time and need to charge their vehicle quickly.

Of course, charging times vary based on the model of vehicle, but this is a rough guide to help with making the decision on which type of charging point to opt for.

Can Any Car Use Any Car Charging Point?

There are only a few different varieties and the majority of vehicles use the same type of connector. Most charging points use a Type 2 Mennekes connector which is fairly universal among electric cars.

Commercial EV Charging Points FAQs

Check with your local planning authority, but in the majority of instances, charging points can be installed within a car park you own with no need for planning permission.

It’s crucial that you work with a qualified and competent electrician for your EV chargers. If you don’t get an Electric Installation Certificate (EIC) from the electrician it can also potentially void warranties or insurance policies relating to the charge point.

There is support available, as the UK Government’s Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) provides grants to some businesses as long as they have dedicated off-street parking for their employees.
