A radiant tube heater is a gas-fired heater that warms people and surfaces directly with infrared, rather than heating the air, which makes it efficient for high-bay spaces such as warehouses. As a gas appliance it must be installed and maintained by a Gas Safe registered engineer, to BS 6896.
Servicing radiant tube heaters
A radiant tube heater service is a gas appliance service carried out to BS 6896 and the manufacturer’s schedule. On each heater our engineers:
- Service the burner and check ignition and flame supervision
- Test combustion and gas soundness
- Inspect and clean the radiant tubes and reflectors
- Check and set the fan and controls
- Confirm the flue or ventilation is safe
- Issue a service record and the gas safety documentation
The heaters are mounted high, usually five to eight metres up in a high-bay space, so a service normally needs a MEWP or access platform, which we factor into the quote rather than springing it on you afterwards.
Repairs and breakdowns
When a heater fails we attend during business hours to diagnose and fix it. The common faults are ignition and flame-supervision failures, fan and control problems, blocked or failed flues, and gas valve faults, most of which are parts we carry or can source quickly.
Where a heater is beyond economic repair we say so and quote a replacement rather than keep charging to nurse a dead unit.
Installation and replacement
We also supply and install radiant tube heaters, sized and positioned to BS 6896 for the building rather than dropped in like-for-like. The number of heaters, their output, and their mounting height are what decide whether a space heats evenly, and it’s where a lot of older installations fall short.
Where radiant is not the right answer, warm air heaters are the usual alternative for commercial and industrial heating.

Annually as a minimum, and the manufacturer warranty usually depends on it. Heaters that run long hours through the winter, or sit in dusty environments like joinery and recycling plants, are often better on a more frequent cycle because the burners and tubes foul faster. Servicing in late summer means a fault surfaces before the cold rather than during it.
They are gas appliances, so the safe-condition duty under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 applies, and all work must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer in commercial categories. A service includes a gas soundness and combustion check and produces the safety documentation an insurer or auditor will expect to see. Domestic Gas Safe registration does not cover the work.
Usually, yes. Radiant tube heaters are mounted high in the roof space, so servicing normally means bringing in powered access such as a MEWP to reach them safely. We plan the access in with the quote, which is why a radiant heater service sits above a floor-standing appliance on price, and why a vague quote that ignores access tends to grow on the day.
Yes, and most of the heaters we look after were installed by somebody else. We work across the common UK brands, and inherited plant usually gets a condition check on the first visit, because service history and the state of the flues and controls are often unknown when we take a site on.
No, radiant heaters can withstand extreme temperature fluctuations without a problem and are designed to last for decades. They are constructed from durable alloys and thermally insulated to allow operation from -30°C to 50°C reliability.
These heaters can last up to 15 years before you need to replace them, but it is possible that you will require some radiant heater repairs in that time.
Radiant tube suits tall, open spaces and spot-heating of work areas, because it warms people and surfaces without trying to heat the whole air volume. Warm air heaters suit spaces that need the whole air temperature brought up evenly. Many sites run a mix, and we service and repair both.
